An opportunity for 12 artists to exhibit works of art in Parish Gallery - Georgetown, Washington, DC’s premier fine art gallery.  One artist among the 12 finalists will receive a prize of 500 USD and have the image of their artwork featured on the cover of at least 1000 copies of Changamiré’s upcoming CD release, Love, and on 300 promotional posters.

Changamire’s debut CD, Only Human, received rave reviews and featured a provocative red cover with the singer’s black silhouette.  The cover was featured in CD manufacturer DiscMakers’ catalogue and has garnered sales through the CDBaby.com CD cover browse feature.  The goal of this competition is to find a cover for Changamiré’s Love CD that will project the same or greater visual appeal.

About Changamiré

Changamiré is a jazz and R&B vocalist from Washington, DC, USA.  She parties to R&B, hip hop, and trance but began singing jazz in her late teens, resulting now in critically-acclaimed performances, recordings, events, and awards.  Her love of all music is reflected on her debut CD, Only Human, which includes jazz, R&B, rap, and soft rock.

In the area of visual art, Changamiré is a collector, supporter, and appreciator of all genres.  Her “Salute to Bearden” to complement the National Gallery of Art’s Romare Bearden exhibition, commissioned “Come to Washington” painting, exhibition tour, and auction, multiple CD cover and promotional concepts, gallery use of her private collection, and current negotiations for an artist exhibition in France comprise her list of visual art endeavors.  Changamiré is a member of the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington.

Artist's Eligibility

The competition is open to all artists 18 years and older with original paintings, photography, and sculpture. Reproductions will not be considered.

The maximum dimension (including frame) should not exceed 18 (w) x 24 (l) inches.  Sculptures should not exceed 20 inches (h) x 20 inches (w) x 20 inches.  Send inquiries for consideration of larger sculpture dimensions to general@sonnigrecords.com.

Paintings and Photographs: Artwork must be framed in museum quality framing, professionally mounted, and ready to hang.  Parish Gallery - Georgetown will reserve the right to reject any works not framed or mounted to industry standards.

Please ensure that frames or plexiglass are not scratched or damaged.  Artwork received in damaged frames or scratched plexiglass will not be exhibited.

Sculptures:  Any unusual hardware, pedestals, or bases for sculptures must be provided by the artist. 

Any artwork which fails to meet these standards will not be included in the exhibition.

Theme for Recording Project

All songs included on Changamiré’s Love CD will examine love and relationships of all types.
Like her Only Human CD (described above), Love will be multi-genre.


Digital Files Specifications

All judging will be done from digital JPG or GIF files.
Files must be 75 dpi, the upload area will resize your image accordingly.
Each file’s name must be the artist’s full name followed by the work’s title.
Example:  john_smith_the_loving.jpg 
Detailed information about the artist and work is entered on the entry form.


Fees

A non-refundable fee of 25 USD ($25) entitles the artist to submit three digital images.


Awards

The jurors will select 12 finalists whose work will be exhibited at Parish Gallery - Georgetown in Washington, D.C. from March 28 – 31, 2008. 
The winner of the competition will receive:

  • 500 USD ($500)
  • Artwork will appear on at least 1000 copies of Changamiré’s Love CD
  • and on at least 300 promotional Love posters

Copyright Statement

All artwork must be completely original to each artist (also referred to as "entrant") entering this competition and must not have been taken or composed, in whole or in part, from any other source other than the entrant, and must not have been released commercially in order to be eligible to enter this competition. Artwork, which contains materials that are not the original work of the entrant, will not be accepted.

Entrants agree that their artwork may be used by Sonnig Records LLC, the host of this competition, in whole or in part for any advertising or publicity purpose surrounding this competition and related events without compensation, with the exception of the 500 USD ($500) cash award for the competition winner.

The winner of this competition grants Sonnig Records LLC the non-exclusive, irrevocable right and license to sell, exhibit, broadcast, copy, reproduce, encode, compress, encrypt, incorporate data into, edit, rebroadcast, transmit, record, publicly perform, create derivative works of, and distribute and synchronize in time related to visual elements, the winning artwork and/or any portion or excerpts thereof, in any manner, an unlimited number of times, in any and all media, now known or hereafter devised, throughout the world in perpetuity.


About Parish Gallery - Georgetown

Located in Washington’s prestigious Georgetown neighborhood, owner Norman Parish originally opened Parish Gallery - Georgetown as a showcase for contemporary visual arts by African Americans and little known local artists. High standards of ethical, curatorial and market selection of the art and artists is exercised by Parish Gallery - Georgetown, catering to the spirit of social preservation and regeneration.  Today, the gallery shows high-quality work from overlooked to internationally renowned artists throughout the world.


Accepted Works

To participate in the gallery exhibition, all finalists are required to sign a Sales Agreement with Parish Gallery - Georgetown.  The Sales Agreement will be emailed to finalists.

Artwork should be accompanied with a CD which includes an image of the artwork featured in the exhibition and an artist’s statement, resume and biography.

Delivery Dates:          February 2 – March 1, 2008*

*Important Notice - Works delivered after the March 1, 2008 deadline
  will not be featured in the exhibition.

Sales

During the exhibition period, works selected by the jurors will be made available for purchase.  Prices will be set by the artist.  However, prices should be an accurate reflection of the artist’s sales history.   Parish Gallery - Georgetown shall reserve the right to refuse works with inflated prices.


Commission

Parish Gallery - Georgetown shall be entitled to a commission of 40% (forty percent) of the sales price. 


Shipping Cost

The Artist will be responsible for all cost related to the delivery and return of artworks to and from the gallery location.


Return of Work

The cost of return shipping in US dollars must be enclosed with the artwork. Payment should be in the form of a money order or certified check. Personal checks are not accepted.  If the artwork is sold, the money order or certified check will be returned.

Shipped work must be sent in a re-usable container, as this container will be used to return unsold work. Work must be securely packed, with identification tags attached to the back of the work. 

A street address must be used for return shipping, as UPS and Federal Express will not deliver to Post Office boxes. 

Unsold works will be returned beginning 2 April 2008.  All hand delivered entries must be picked up between 2-10 April 2008.


Insurance

While on its premises, the artworks will be covered by Parish Gallery - Georgetown’ insurance.
 
(A)       LOST or STOLEN.   If an artwork is lost or stolen while on its premises, the Gallery will be responsible to the Artist for the artist’s commission.

(B)       DAMAGE.   If an artwork should become damaged while on its premises, the Gallery will be responsible for the cost to refurbish the item.  In the event the item is not repairable, the Gallery will be responsible to the Artist for the artist’s commission


Reception and Exhibition Opening

The exhibition, Love, opens to the public with a reception at Parish Gallery - Georgetown on Friday, 28 March 2008 from 6-9 PM, where the winner of the CD art competition will be announced.  Light fare will be served.  Details for the private VIP reception will only be given to finalists.

Additionally, Changamiré and Parish Gallery - Georgetown will mail over 250 invitations to their mailing lists for the exhibition opening and notify the press of all competition-related events and news.  Accepted artists are encouraged to submit additional names and addresses (up to 25 per artist) of interested art buyers within a 50 mile radius of Washington, DC, USA to general@sonnigrecords.com


 

Entry Form

Entering this competition and, if selected, exhibition shall constitute understanding and agreement on the part of the artist with all the conditions stated herein.
